For Timmins and surrounding areas, it began in 1992 when the doors to the Rape Crisis Centre first opened to women needing support for Sexual Violence. Since then, we have changed our name to Timmins and Area Women in Crisis, rebranded ourselves and closed gaps in services connected to Violence against Women. In 2010, we opened the doors to H.E.R. Place Women’s Shelter, a 10-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are fleeing violence and/ or abuse. Since that day in 2010, H.E.R. Place has been a home to hundreds of women and children who have found safety, comfort and solace in the hands of our empathetic and knowledgeable staff team. Then, in 2015, an essential partnership between Violence against Women services and the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board initiated Timmins’ first Second Stage Housing Program. Because this program is service intensive, women and their children have the opportunity to find their independence while remaining safe in a secure building. TAWC uses grass-roots, feminist ethics to guide its work for women in our community and beyond. As advocates for the eradication of Violence against Women, we provide inclusive services to all women-identified people in a non-judgemental and confidential way, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We can help!
